Trousers Fit Perfectly: What to Know Before Hemming

Every week, clients come to me with trousers that are 'almost perfect,' but the length lets them down. Usually the issue is that the item was bought without trying on or the shoes weren't considered. In my 12 years at Azhur, I've hemmed over 5,000 pairs of trousers and I know: proper preparation saves time and money. Here's what you need to do before handing your trousers to a master.
How to Determine the Right Length
The ideal length depends on the style and the shoes you'll wear with the trousers. For fitting, be sure to wear the same shoes you plan to wear: heels change the fit by 2-4 cm.
The 'One Crease' Rule for Classic Trousers
Classic trousers with creases should touch the top of the shoe and form one small crease at the front. At the back, the hem reaches the middle of the heel. For trousers without creases, a slight break of 1-2 cm is acceptable.
Length for Casual and Chinos
Everyday trousers (chinos, slacks) are usually shorter: at the front, the hem is 1-2 cm above the ankle, at the back slightly lower. For sneakers or loafers, you can make them even shorter, to the ankle.
- Classic trousers: one crease at the front, at the back to the middle of the heel.
- Chinos and slacks: at the front 1-2 cm above the ankle, at the back slightly lower.
- Cropped trousers: to the ankle or slightly above — for summer and sneakers.
- Trousers with cuffs: length 1-2 cm shorter so the cuff doesn't touch the shoes.
What Affects the Complexity of Hemming
Not all trousers are equally simple to hem. The material, lining, and decoration can increase work time and cost.
Fabric and Its Treatment
Thin fabrics (silk, viscose) require careful hemming to avoid waves. Dense suiting fabrics (wool, tweed) are easier to hem but need a powerful iron. Denim is hemmed with a special needle #90-100, otherwise threads break.
Lining and Decorative Elements
If trousers are lined, the lining needs to be shortened separately — this adds 15-20 minutes. Creases, stripes, and piping require pattern matching after shortening, otherwise it will look messy.
| Fabric Type | Complexity | Work Time | Price (from, ₸) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suiting (wool, wool blend) | Low | 20-30 min | 1500 |
| Cotton, linen | Medium | 30-40 min | 2000 |
| Denim | Medium | 30-40 min | 2500 |
| Silk, viscose | High | 40-60 min | 3000 |
| With lining | High | +15-20 min | +500 |
How to prepare trousers for a visit to the atelier
Before coming to Azhur, do three things: wash or dry-clean your trousers, put on the shoes you'll wear with them, and bring a belt if you plan to wear one. Trousers can shrink by 2-5% after washing, so they should be hemmed after shrinkage.
Why a fitting is needed
At Azhur, we always do a fitting before the final hem. You come in the trousers, put on your shoes, and I mark the desired length with pins. If the trousers are lined, a fitting is mandatory to ensure the lining doesn't show. The fitting takes 5-10 minutes, but the result is precise.
- Washing/dry cleaning: trousers must be clean and pre-shrunk before hemming.
- Shoes: bring the ones you'll wear — heels change the length by 2-4 cm.
- Belt: if the trousers have belt loops, wear it — the fit changes.
- Pins: if you know the exact length, you can mark it with pins yourself, but it's better to trust the tailor.
Common mistakes when hemming trousers
The most common is hemming too short. You can't cut off extra fabric 'just in case': if you make a mistake, the trousers can't be lengthened. The second mistake is not accounting for shoes: trousers hemmed for flats will hang over heels.
Why you shouldn't hem trousers yourself
A home sewing machine often can't handle dense fabric, the stitching goes crooked or skips stitches. Also, without an overlocker, the edge frays. We use industrial equipment and special presser feet — the stitching lasts for years.
- Mistake 1: hemming too short — trousers can't be lengthened if you cut off too much.
- Mistake 2: not accounting for shoes — length for flats doesn't work for heels.
- Mistake 3: hem before washing — after shrinkage, the trousers will become short.
- Mistake 4: ignore the lining — it will peek out from under the trouser leg.
What to remember
Hemming trousers is a simple operation if approached wisely. Determine the length with shoes, consider the fabric and lining, and don't skimp on fitting. Then the trousers will fit perfectly and last a long time.
- Come to the atelier wearing the shoes you will wear with the trousers.
- Wash or dry-clean the trousers before hemming.
- Don't hem too short — it's better to leave a 1-2 cm allowance.
- Trust professionals: a home sewing machine won't give a neat stitch.
