What Questions I'll Ask at the First Meeting

Choosing Fabric: What to Look For
Fabric is 50% of a dress's success. In our atelier, we work with suppliers from Turkey, Italy, and China, and always advise clients to come for a consultation before purchasing material.
How to Check Fabric Quality
Touch the sample, crumple it in your fist — if creases remain, the fabric holds its shape poorly. Hold it up to the light: even thread weave indicates good quality.
- Natural silk: breathes but wrinkles and requires delicate care.
- Suiting wool: holds shape, suitable for jackets and sheath dresses.
- Cotton with elastane: comfortable for everyday styles.
- Satin: shiny, suitable for evening wear.
- Chiffon: lightweight, requires lining.
Fabric consumption: for a midi dress in size 44-46, you need 2–2.5 meters with a width of 140 cm. If the fabric is striped or checkered, add 0.5 meters for pattern matching.
Timeline and cost: what affects the price
The price of a custom dress is determined by the complexity of the cut, fabric consumption, and decoration. On average, sewing takes 5–10 working days, but rush orders (2–3 days) are possible with a 30% surcharge.

Prices are quoted without the cost of fabric. The first fitting is included in the sewing; subsequent fittings are 3,000 ₸ each. We do not charge extra for minor adjustments (taking in the side, shortening a sleeve).
Sewing process: from taking measurements to the finished garment
After choosing the fabric and style, I take measurements — about 15 parameters, from bust circumference to shoulder height. Then I draft a pattern based on your measurements, cut the fabric, and do the first fitting on a mannequin.
What happens at fittings
The first fitting is a rough version made from mock-up fabric. You try on the semi-finished garment, and together we assess the fit: whether it pinches at the armhole or puckers at the back. I make chalk marks and adjust the pattern. The second fitting is in the actual fabric, with final adjustments. A third fitting is rare, only for complex models.
- Seam allowances: 1–1.5 cm for most fabrics, 2 cm for loose materials.
- Hem allowance: 3–4 cm to allow length adjustment.
We use interfacing materials (fusible interfacing, corset tape) to reinforce stress points. Every seam is finished with an overlock or French seam — this ensures durability.

A custom dress is an investment in your image. To ensure the result meets expectations, come with references, choose fabric together with the designer, and don't be afraid to ask questions. A perfect fit is possible if you honestly communicate your wishes and discomforts.
