Zipper Jammed for Good: Replace or Still Save?

A zipper gets stuck, breaks, or comes apart — and your favorite jacket, skirt, or tablet case hangs in the closet like dead weight. At Azhur, I see such items every day. In 80% of cases, the zipper can be saved, and it will cost less than buying a new item. But there are situations where it's simpler and more cost-effective to replace the entire fastener. I'll explain how to tell one from the other and what to do.

When the Zipper Can Be Repaired Without Replacement

If the zipper has come apart, the slider is stuck, or the pull tab has broken off — it's not a death sentence. I often take on repairs when a client brings in an item and says, 'The zipper is stuck, it won't unzip.' Most often, the problem is in the slider itself or fabric caught in the teeth.

Replacing the Slider (Zipper Pull)

The slider is the most vulnerable part. If it's loose, cracked, or no longer locks the zipper, it can be replaced. The key is to find the right one: by type (molded plastic, coil, metal), width, and size (No. 3, No. 5, No. 7). At Azhur, we have sliders in all popular sizes. The cost of replacement starts from 500 ₸, and the job takes 10–15 minutes. If the zipper is expensive or rare, we remove the old slider and put on a new one — the item is as good as new.

Fixing Snags and Sticking

Often a zipper sticks because fabric gets caught between the teeth. I carefully pull out threads, lubricate the teeth with paraffin or special wax — and the mechanism runs smoothly again. Sometimes sticking is caused by deformed teeth: then I straighten them with pliers. If the teeth aren't broken, such a repair costs 300–700 ₸ and takes no more than half an hour.

Repairing the Stop (Lock)

The bottom or top stop can break off — then the slider comes off. I install a new stop made of brass or plastic. This is cheaper than replacing the entire zipper: from 400 ₸ per stop. If the stop is broken on a jacket you wear every day, it's better to replace the whole zipper at once — otherwise it will break again in a month.

When It's Easier to Replace the Entire Zipper

There are three situations where repair is pointless: the teeth are worn down or chipped, the zipper tape is torn, or the zipper is too old (more than 5–7 years of active wear). In such cases, I recommend a full replacement.

Wear of Teeth and Tape

If the teeth are worn down by 30% or more — the zipper will come apart even with a new slider. I check: I run my finger along the teeth — if I feel sharp edges or chips, the plastic or metal is worn. Damage to Fabric Around the Zipper

Non-Standard Length or Rare Type

How to Extend Zipper Life: Master's Tips

To keep your zipper from breaking prematurely, follow three rules:

• Don't force it: if the zipper sticks, don't yank it hard — you risk breaking the teeth or slider. Better take it to the atelier right away.
• Clean the teeth: once a month, wipe the zipper with a dry brush to remove sand, lint, and threads. This is especially important on jackets and down coats.
• Lubricate every six months: use paraffin (a candle) or special zipper wax. Do not use oil — it attracts dirt.

If a zipper on a jacket you wear in rain and snow gets stuck, be sure to lubricate it after drying — moisture accelerates wear.

What to remember

Not every zipper failure is a death sentence. In most cases, it's enough to replace the slider or stop, which is cheap and done in an hour. If the teeth are worn or the fabric is torn, replacing the entire zipper pays off with a long service life. Before throwing away an item, show it to a master: often repairs cost 500–1500 ₸, while a new jacket costs 20,000 ₸. Take care of your belongings — they can last longer.

• If the slider jams or comes off — bring it in for repair, it can be fixed in 10 minutes.
• If the teeth are worn or the tape is torn — replace the entire zipper, otherwise it will break again.
• Regular cleaning and lubrication with paraffin helps extend the life of a zipper.
